Why the G80 M3 Has Been Tricky to Tune

BMW significantly beefed up security on its Bosch ECUs from around mid-2020 onwards, and every G-series M2, M3 and M4 runs one of these locked-down units. That meant the old-school approach of simply flashing a new map onto the stock ECU stopped working — the ECU had to be unlocked first before any custom tuning could even begin.

That’s no longer a bottleneck for our customers. Our full unlock service opens the door to custom tuning, live data logging, fault code reading, and a range of additional functionality that’s simply unavailable on a locked ECU. And if you ever want to accept a BMW software update down the line, the ECU can be reverted to fully stock at any time.

Once unlocked, the car goes on our Stage 1 remap — and the results are worth the wait (or, in this case, the lack of one).

• +217 bhp over stock, achieved while keeping the OPF particulate filters and the standard exhaust in place
• Single, fuel-optimised map tuned around 97/99 octane super unleaded, producing around 670 bhp and over 590 lb-ft / 800 Nm
• Drive-mode adjustability — power delivery can still be tailored on the fly using the BMW drive mode settings, so the car can be as tame or as aggressive as the moment calls for

Built to Grow With the Car

Stage 1 is only the starting point. For owners who want to go further, there’s the option to step up to a higher-flow tuning platform with switchable maps for different fuel types, plus an optional gearbox tune to sharpen shift response to match the extra power. Everything is modular, so the car can be built up in stages rather than committing to everything at once.
