Ford Ranger Raptor Stage 1 vs Stage 2: Which Tune Is Right for You?

Short answer: Stage 1 is a software-only tune that takes a UK Ranger Raptor 3.0 V6 EcoBoost to 450 BHP, or 475+ BHP on 99 RON, on the standard hardware. Stage 2 adds an upgraded intercooler, cold air intake and high-flow downpipes with an ECU and TCU calibration, for up to 530 BHP and 620 lb-ft on 99 RON.
The 3.0-litre V6 Ranger Raptor responds incredibly well to tuning. The question we get asked isn’t normally whether we can make one faster. It’s how far should I go?
For some owners, unlocking the potential already sitting in the standard truck is enough. Others want the intercooler, intake, downpipes and supporting hardware and want to see what the Raptor is really capable of.
There isn’t one right answer. It depends on what you want from the truck, how you use it and how far you ultimately intend to take the build.
Stage 1 vs Stage 2 at a glance
| Stage 1 | Stage 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 450 BHP, or 475+ BHP on 99 RON (Complete Stage 1) | Up to 530 BHP and 620 lb-ft |
| Hardware | None, standard hardware | Upgraded intercooler, cold air intake, high-flow downpipes (sports cats) |
| Calibration | ECU | ECU and TCU |
| Fuel | 97 RON or better (99 RON for Complete Stage 1) | 99 RON at all times |
| Time | Usually within a day, or remotely via HP Tuners RTD | Usually two to three days with hardware fitted |
Ranger Raptor Stage 1: the sensible first step
For many owners, Stage 1 is a sensible starting point: significantly stronger performance while retaining the everyday usability that makes the Raptor attractive.
It starts with the truck’s existing hardware. You don’t need to commit to the full intercooler, intake and downpipe package immediately.
Our Ranger Raptor ECU tuning includes a 450 BHP Stage 1 option and a 475+ BHP Complete Stage 1 option for 99 RON fuel. The separate 400 BHP factory-power restore is another option; it isn’t the same calibration.
Best suited to: someone who wants a noticeably quicker Raptor without immediately committing to the supporting hardware required for Stage 2.
What changes with Stage 2?
Stage 2 starts addressing physical restrictions, with supporting hardware alongside the calibration. The parts and software need to work as a combination.
Our Ranger Raptor Stage 2 package delivers up to 530 BHP and 620 lb-ft on 99 RON fuel, with the following supporting specification:
- Upgraded intercooler: helps manage charge temperatures when the truck is working hard.
- Cold air intake: reduces intake restriction as part of the matched setup.
- High-flow downpipes: sports-catalyst downpipes form part of the package.
- ECU and TCU calibration: engine and gearbox calibration developed for the hardware and 99 RON fuel.
“We aren’t interested in bolting random modifications onto a truck and hoping they work together. We’re building a combination.”
Do I need to go straight to Stage 2?
No. You don’t need to walk into Motorsport & Performance and spend thousands of pounds on day one. Cars — and Raptors — can be built in stages.
Or Stage 1 might be exactly what you wanted. That’s fine. We’d rather build the right truck with you than sell you the biggest invoice we can on your first visit.
Can I fit an intake before tuning it?
Yes, with an intake intended for the truck and its existing calibration.
The S&B cold air intake we stock requires no tune when fitted on its own. It is also compatible with Stage 1 and Stage 2, so it can remain part of a later build.
That makes it a possible first step if you want more induction sound before committing to software. Check the exact model-year fitment with us first. You can watch the installation video here.
What does a Stage 2 Ranger Raptor actually drive like?
Dyno figures are only part of the story. The vehicle needs to work properly on the road and retain useful drivability.
Richard Hammond’s Ranger Raptor is a real example of our Stage 2 work: the supporting hardware and ECU/TCU calibration on 99 RON, with a result of 530 BHP and 620 lb-ft. Read the Richard Hammond Ranger Raptor build or watch the first drive on YouTube.
Is Stage 2 suitable for road use?
Everyday drivability is part of the build brief. Road-use suitability also needs to be confirmed for your truck and the exact exhaust and emissions specification. Discuss that with us before choosing the package; a stage label alone doesn’t settle it.
What would we recommend?
Talk to us about how you actually use the Raptor. Tell us what you like about it. Tell us what annoys you about it. And tell us where you’d eventually like the truck to end up.
If Stage 1 gets you everything you’re looking for, we’ll tell you. If you’re ultimately chasing the complete Stage 2 build, we’ll map out how to get there. And if you want to start with an intake, a service or something smaller and see how you get on with us first, that’s absolutely fine too.
That’s generally how the best builds happen anyway.
